Now most of the time when you witness to someone they are not going to drop on their knees, repent, and become an apostle Paul. Most will have many objections or will find ways to avoid the issue all together. Perhaps one of the most frequent objections is that people believe they are a believer already, even if you already explained what a believer is. Now they very well could be a believer, but if they are giving the impression that they are not a true believer, then what do you do? If they are not already going to a church, then try to get them into a good one. If they are already going to a church, try to find out if that church has a good discipleship program. If not, then see if you can find a discipleship class for them, you can bring them to the class offered by Cleansing Word Ministries, or you can start a Bible study with them yourself. Of course, continue to pray for them. The goal is to see them become a mature believer, so there is no longer any doubt if they are saved. Besides that should be the goal anyway (Ephesians 4:11-16).
Some may bring up other challenges to the faith. They may say things like, “How could a loving God send someone to hell.” In that case, point out to them that we chose heaven or hell, God just allows us to make the choice. Some may say that all religions lead to God/heaven. Point out to them that almost all religions claim to be the only way and if that is not true then how can we embrace any of those religions? They may consider becoming a Unitarian Universalist, but they would be in the same dilemma. Either all the religions that claim the only way are all untrustworthy or one is the correct faith. Perhaps they may say that all contain some truth, but what are they using to determine which parts are true? Now as to refuting which religion is true, check out The Kingdom of the Cults by Walter Martin.
Others may directly question the truthfulness of the Bible or some other part of the Christian faith. It is good to become a researcher. A helpful place to begin would be with guys like Lee Strobel at www.leestrobel.com and Josh McDowell at www.josh.org. Their websites and books offer a lot of evidence to the truthfulness of the Bible. Never be ashamed to admit you don't know an answer, but you will look into it and get back to them. Again, we are urged to “always [be] ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15). We do not have to always have the answers, but we certainly should be learning more answers as time goes on. Please study, study, study.
